VA2A "The Argonaut"
The Argonaut is a heavily modified version of a 1968 LA2A. It's named after the Argonaut SS-475 submarine that made its last voyage in 1968. To complement the submarine design, the VU sits in a metal frame resembling a porthole. The "Gain" & "Reduction" knobs feature embedded genuine buttons from The Royal Navy, and the letters "A" serve as pointer arrows.
Transformers: UTC A24 (input), UTC A20 (output)
Valves (Tubes): Original NOS UREI T4B from the 70s. This is one of the most rare and on demand parts for LA2As and LA3As. It has a slightly faster release than its Teletronix T4B predecessor.
Opitcal Cell: Original NOS UREI T4B (70s). This is one of the most rare and on demand parts for LA2As and LA3As. It has a slightly faster release than its Teletronix T4B predecessor.
Potentiometers: Custom replication of the original Allen & Bradley LA2A pots and feature the same custom audio taper. They are made by Blore Edwards - the current supplier for AMS Neve pots.
Some of the many mods on The Argonaut include:
- passive output pot for heavy distortion and saturation,
- unbalanced DI output,
- internal filtering of high-frequency artifacts
- extended frequency range
